Claude Code vs. ChatGPT for marketing: when to use which (and why I use both)
I write a whole blog about Claude Code, so you’d probably expect me to tell you it’s the only AI tool you need, that ChatGPT is yesterday’s news, and that you should cancel your OpenAI subscription and never look back.
But I’m not going to say that, because it’s not true.
I use ChatGPT every single day. I also use Claude Code every single day. They do different things well, and understanding when to reach for each one has honestly been more valuable than mastering either one in isolation.
This isn’t a “which AI is better” debate. (I find those kind of boring, honestly.) Instead, this is a practical breakdown of how I actually use these tools in my marketing work, and why I think the right answer for most marketers is “both.”
What I actually use ChatGPT for
ChatGPT is my go-to for three specific things, and it’s really good at all of them.
A smarter search engine
I use ChatGPT the way a lot of people used to use Google: quick factual questions where I need a straightforward answer. What are the NFL overtime rules? Why is my external monitor flickering? What’s the deadline for estimated tax payments this quarter?
For this kind of thing, ChatGPT is faster and more useful than either a search engine or Claude Code. I don’t need to open a terminal or set up a project. I just type my question and get an answer. It’s replaced about 80% of the Googling I used to do.
Deep research
When I need to genuinely understand a topic before I act on it, ChatGPT’s deep research mode is incredibly useful. I’ve used it to research competitors before, and while I’ve since moved a lot of that workflow into Claude Code, ChatGPT is still my first stop when I need a broad understanding of something new.
The way I think about it: ChatGPT is great for the learning phase. When I’m trying to wrap my head around a topic, compare viewpoints, or figure out what questions I should even be asking, it’s hard to beat.
Image prompt generation
This one’s a bit niche, but it comes up a lot in marketing work. When I have a visual concept in my head and need to translate it into a prompt for Midjourney or another image generator, I’ll describe what I’m imagining to ChatGPT and ask it to write the prompt for me.
ChatGPT is surprisingly good at understanding phrases like “I want something that feels warm and editorial, like a magazine photo from the ’90s” and turning that into specific, detailed image generation prompts. It’s a translator between my vague creative vision and the very specific language that image generators need.
Why I chose Claude for marketing work
On the other hand, when I’m writing something that other people will read (a blog post, an email, social copy) I almost always reach for Claude.
The reason is simple: Claude’s default voice is closer to how real people actually write. ChatGPT has a distinct style that, once you notice it, you can’t un-notice. The em dashes, the “Here’s the thing:” openings, the way it structures everything into tidy parallel lists. It’s competent, but it reads like AI.
Claude’s output, especially with a little guidance, reads more like something a human would write. And for marketing, that difference matters a lot.
But the bigger reason I use Claude Code specifically is the CLAUDE.md file. If you haven’t used it yet, it’s a file that lives in your project folder where you teach Claude your preferences: your writing style, your brand voice, your formatting rules, how you like to structure things. The magic is that you teach it once and it persists across every session. No more copying and pasting your brand guidelines into every conversation. No more starting from scratch each time. Claude Code remembers how you write, what you like, and what to avoid, and it gets better over time as you refine those instructions.
With ChatGPT, every new conversation is a blank slate. With Claude Code, every conversation builds on the last one.
What I actually use Claude Code for
If ChatGPT is where I go for answers, Claude Code is where I go to make things.
The outputs are fundamentally different. When I use ChatGPT, I get text in a chat window that I copy and paste somewhere else. When I use Claude Code, I get files, pages, workflows, and automations that live on my computer and keep working after the conversation ends.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Building and editing this website. This entire blog is built and maintained with Claude Code. Every post, every design tweak, every new feature. I describe what I want in plain English, and Claude writes the code, creates the files, and I can see the changes in my browser. No design tools, no coding knowledge required.
Content repurposing. I’ll drop a call transcript or a podcast recording into Claude Code and ask it to pull out social posts. The output isn’t a chat message I need to copy. It’s a set of ready-to-use files, already formatted the way I like them.
Competitor research that turns into something. I use Claude Code to research competitors and the output is a structured markdown file with the analysis organized and saved, not just a conversation I have to scroll back through later.
Skills and automations. This is the part that really sets Claude Code apart. I’ve built custom skills that do things like send email broadcasts through Kit with a single command. These are repeatable workflows that run the same way every time.
The key insight: with Claude Code, the output is a thing (a file, a page, a workflow), not just an answer.
So what’s the real difference?
Here’s the simplest way I can describe how I think about these two tools:
ChatGPT gives you answers. Claude Code gives you artifacts shaped in your voice.
ChatGPT is a brilliant conversationalist. It’s fast, it’s knowledgeable, and it’s great at explaining things, brainstorming, and helping you think through problems. But at the end of the conversation, you still have to do the work of turning those answers into something.
Claude Code is more like a collaborator who actually does the work with you. It creates the files, builds the pages, writes the emails, and does it all in a way that sounds like you wrote it (because you’ve taught it how).
I should address the elephant in the room: yes, Claude is made by Anthropic and ChatGPT is made by OpenAI. I’m not sponsored by either company. I genuinely use both every day, and I recommend both to different people for different reasons. The AI tribalism thing where you have to pick a side and defend it is silly. Use whatever works.
And yes, OpenAI has Codex, which is their answer to Claude Code. It has a lot of the same ingredients: a persistent instructions file (called AGENTS.md), the ability to work with your codebase, and an increasingly capable model underneath. But its whole setup is optimized around software development workflows (repos, tests, pull requests), and it runs in a cloud sandbox rather than directly on your machine. Could a marketer use it? Sure. But Claude Code’s ecosystem of skills, MCP servers, and local-first approach just fits marketing work better right now.

When to use which (the simple version)
Use ChatGPT when you need:
- A quick answer to a factual question
- Help brainstorming or thinking through a problem
- Image generation prompts
- Deep research on an unfamiliar topic
Use Claude Code when you need:
- To build or edit something (a website, a page, a tool)
- To automate a repeatable workflow
- Anything reader-facing that needs to sound like you
- To create files and outputs that persist after the conversation
Use both when:
- You’re researching a topic (ChatGPT) and then creating content about it (Claude Code)
- You’re brainstorming concepts (ChatGPT) and then building them (Claude Code)
- You need a quick answer now (ChatGPT) but want to build a system for it later (Claude Code)
Try it yourself
If you’ve been using ChatGPT for everything and wondering whether Claude Code actually adds anything, it depends on what you’re trying to do. If all you need is answers and brainstorming, ChatGPT is great and you might not need anything else.
